J.R.R. Tolkein famously wrote: “not all those who wander are lost” and this iconic line still speaks to adventurers young and old. For those of us with the travel bug, there’s so much in the world to see and not enough time to do it in.
Of course, every traveller you ask will have different recommendations for must-see places so we’ve scoured the globe and picked out three of our favourites, whether you’re looking at adventure holidays abroad or booking a UK break with friends:
Trek the Inca Trail in Peru
You can follow the footsteps of the Peruvian Incas and experience unrivalled views, dramatic scenery and rich history on the ancient Inca Trail. It begins at the Urubamba River and winds its way across mountain passes, through forests, and past crumbling fortresses before reaching the legendary Machu Picchu.
This lost city is counted as one of the ‘seven wonders of the world’ for good reason – it’s set high amongst the lush vegetation of the Amazon and surrounded by steep mountain ranges that make for breath-taking views. The Inca Trail is truly an adventure like no other and certainly not for the faint-hearted.
Scale the Inaccessible Pinnacle in Skye
The Isle of Skye is a beautiful destination for any holiday-goer; it’s world-famous for rugged landscapes, medieval castles, a stunning coastline of peninsulas and lochs, and its renowned whiskey distilleries.
Adventurers will also know Skye for its mountainous interior, and many thrill seekers head to the island to climb Sgùrr Dearg, a mountain in the Cuillin range. It is topped by the Inaccessible Pinnacle, the second highest summit in the range but Britain’s most notorious climb. It is the most difficult of the Munros (the Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet high) as it requires a rock climb and an abseil to complete the ascent. No climbing experience is needed, but you’ll certainly require help from an expert to conquer this impressive peak.
Snorkel with Sharks in the Galapagos
You’d be hard-pressed to find an adventure holiday that’s more thrilling than swimming in shark-infested waters. This is exactly what you can do in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador; not a typical dive location but one that is incredibly rewarding.
You’ll never forget the serenely beautiful underwater world you’ll witness when snorkelling in the Galapagos, as well as the rush of adrenaline from being in touching distance of such a powerful predator as the shark. There are twelve species you can try to spot, such as the scalloped hammerheads, Galapagos shark, whitetip reef sharks or blacktip and gray reef sharks.
Whatever you want from an adventure holiday- whether it’s trekking, climbing, snorkelling or anything else that takes your fancy – make it count by trying something new that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. There are plenty of exciting experiences to be had, both across the globe and right on your doorstep.
